zoo

If you’re looking for something to do with the kids today — or just somewhere to go yourself – the Oregon Zoo is open today and free in honor of Martin Luther King.

Donations for the Oregon Food Bank are encouraged but not required.  And it may be chilly, but the sun is out in Portland in January, an event all by itself!

Details at http://www.oregonzoo.org/

The humans have fun (as well as aggravation) in the snow but the animals at the Oregon Zoo just seem to have fun. If you can’t visit, you can watch a short video of tigers enjoying a roll in the snow or our baby elephant making his version of snow angels.

Snow Day 2008

ZooLights is also still open if you haven’t been…and even more fun in snowy weather.

My visit to ZooLights had a bonus — the Elephant House was open and Samudra was taking a nap — not at all concerned about lights or holidays or even more visitors strolling by.

Be sure to visit ZooLights during the Holiday season — the number of lights is amazing.  They’ve moved a few old favorites around because some areas are under construction, so it’s fun to find them in a different location.  And there are a few new ones as well.

Check out the Oregon Zoo web site for information on hours, prices, etc.  http://www.oregonzoo.org/Events/ZooLights/index.htm

This year the Zoo store is also selling some “holographic” glasses that add extra zing to the lights.  I think these are the same thing as “3D” glasses if you have some left over from a movie.  Lots of the children seemed to be enjoying them.

Most animals are not out and some sections of the Zoo are not open because it’s too dark or steep to be in those areas — so plan to go for the lighted animals.  Getting to see Sam napping was just extra fun.

Don’t forget — special day for seniors (65+) at the Oregon Zoo from 9-3 on Tuesday.  Free admission, train rides and free coffee while it lasts.  Each senior may have 1 free companion — anyone else can come along but will need to pay admission.  Sponsored by Providence Health Plans.

The weather is still good — go visit our newest elephant.  http://www.oregonzoo.org/Events/seniorsafari.htm

The Oregon Zoo announced today that the winning name in the contest to name the baby Asian elephant is Samudra.  It got 35% of the more than 17,000 votes cast and is Hindi for “lord of the ocean.”   It’s likely that most people will call him Sam.

I went up to visit him earlier this week and keepers said he was gaining about 5 pounds a day.  That’s not bad for a guy who started out close to 300 to begin with.  More info on the baby’s progress, visiting hours, etc., are at http://www.oregonzoo.org/

Our two-week old baby Asian elephant needs a name!  The Oregon Zoo staff have selected 5 possible names — you can vote for the one you like most at http://www.oregonzoo.org/Voter/vote_form.cfm

Voting is open through Sept 11 and the choice will be announced next Friday.  Rose-Tu and baby continue to be on exhibit most days from 10-3 — depending on their comfort level with the crowds.  Allow time for crowds and waiting in line.

We have our baby elephant and he seems to be doing well after a bit of a jolt at the beginning.  “He” was predicted to be “she” so the Zoo will be rethinking whatever names they had in mind.  But all anyone was concerned about yesterday was that Rose-Tu would get through the delivery successfully and that the baby would be ok.  There’s a pretty high infant mortality rate and first babies can always be tricky. (more…)

lizardOK, I’m escaping for a few days.  It’s been hard work around here, what with the Rose Festival and all.   So I’m going over the wall.  To a somewhat warmer climate than Portland in June — fully expecting summer to arrive while I’m gone.   I need a little heat to thaw out these muscles.  Will be off the grid, but I’ll be back!

In the meantime, don’t forget to visit my cousins up at the Zoo — they’ll enjoy seeing you!

The Oregon Zoo Brewers Festival will be held this Friday, May 30, 2008, from 5:00 to 10:00 PM.  Go taste a few beers from Northwest microbreweries and listen to live entertainment.  Please note this is a 21 and over event — not for children.  See http://www.oregonzoo.org/Support/Zoo_Brew.htm for details and prices.
