IOTW -- Irritant of the week

I’ve been looking at words for as long as I can remember — from hanging over the arm of the person reading to me as a child, trying to see how they were making those things on the page turn into a story, to spell-checking movie credits (just last week). Not that I intentionally check movie credits, it just happens in the back of my mind as I’m watching them go by.  (more…)

I think I’m adding this as a new category…the one thing that was most exasperating this week.  Some weeks there are many to choose from — some weeks only one or two.

This week it’s representatives of various agencies who choose to block calls from unidentified numbers.  I don’t mind if you block calls to your personal number — that’s your business.  But if you want me to call you — and say it’s urgent — and then go out of the way to make it difficult, that just doesn’t make sense.  You were looking for me — not the other way around.  And what good reason is there for a mid-level government service agency to be blocking calls anyway?   I’m sure the agencies who might be concerned about some kind of threat have ways to find out who’s calling whether the number is restricted or not.

I’m not a telephone person anyway so calling me isn’t really the way to get in touch — but I’m certainly going to be less inclined to respond to you if you make it difficult.
